NAT BURGWYN RECEIVES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

With stealth, subterfuge, and a little help from Lefty Kreh, Nat Burgwyn was the recipient of the first ever Nat Burgwyn Lifetime Achievement Award, given at the Annual Banquet in January 2004. A standing ovation from the assembly greeted him as he approached the podium, and the usually talkative Nat was rendered speech-less. His only comment was "It's not in the program!". Testimonials from Lefty and others marked the occasion, and throughout the evening, accolades from friends and well-wishers were delivered with sincerity. The audience also was treated to a screening of "Nat Burgwyn: A Lifetime in Fly Fishing", a DVD from noted producer/director Dan Genest. Lefty and FFV President Richard Roadcap presented Nat with a plaque, emblazoned with the FFV logo on a burgundy background, which read "...for outstanding support and dedication to the sport of fly fishing". Congratulations, Nat, for many jobs well done!

Update on FFV 20th Anniversary Pins

It was announced at the 20th Anniversary dinner that the company we had contracted with to produce our 20th Anniversary pins had mistakenly sent us the wrong design. We are not sure how they did it, but they sent us an older design that we had not ordered in years! Anyhow, we have made arrangements to have them replaced with the proper pins and they will be distributed as they become available. We will also be sending out the FFV 20th Anniversary history booklet that David Bagby edited to anyone that did not pick one up at the September dinner meeting. We will keep you posted as these events develop.

CONSERVATION NEWS - September 2002

By Richard Roadcap

A bond referendum will be on the ballot Election Day, November 5, 2002. Virginia voters will be asked to approve the issuance of $119 million in bonds for Virginia Parks and Natural Areas. Of this amount up to $36.5 million will be used to purchase land for new and existing state parks and natural areas. Virginia ranks near the bottom of the 50 states in terms of per capita spending on state parks and recreation areas. Let’s go to the polls November 5 and support this important measure.

If you’re like me, you’re on everybody’s mailing list, and sometimes you get inundated with promotions for a lot of different organizations. The internet can a good way to keep up with news about conservation without subscribing to a lot of magazines or relying on the local paper. Some suggested websites might be:

National Wildlife Federation: (www.nwf.org) a good source of news about national and international issues.

Izaak Walton League of America: (www.iwla.org) a national organization with local chapters in most states. They focus on stream and wetland conservation with a emphasis on local projects.

Coastal Conservation Association: (www.ccavirginia.org) news about Virginia’s saltwater fishing and efforts to conserve marine resources both in-state and the east coast.

The Roanoke Times: (www.billcochran.com) long-time outdoor columnist Bill Cochran has a great review of hunting, fishing and conservation news from around the state.

Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries: (www.dgif.state.va.us) last but not least, the Game Department site has lots of information, news, references, and the "Shad Cam" in season.

The FFV board of directors is asking for nominations for the 2003 Taylor F. Turner, Jr. Conservation Award. If you have someone in mind, contact any board member with your recommendation.

Wingina Fishing Trip - September 2002

by Bill Pearsall

Saul and Sheldon Mutchnick, Ken Barnes, Greg Henning, Nat Burgwyn, Tom Howell and T.C. Stone, Jim Mathers and Sally Richards, Walt Guard, Scott Candler, Dale Huggins and I braved the heat and low water for the annual Winginia trip – yes, there was thunder and burgers and also some fish. Check Walt’s picture for proof, I think he was the only one who caught one that size, but sure makes a good picture!!!

By the way, heat and thunder do not always bring rain. It sure fooled us!! We came in early to beat the storm that was rumbling on both sides of the river and then it stopped so we ate a little earlier. Good thing Nat arrived in time with the grill and table, I hate cooking those burgers on a stick!!

In all it was a good trip - with all of the essentialelements: heat, thunder, low water, food, fish and good company!!

Freshwater Report By Dan Genest - July 2002  - Summer times does not have to mark the end of your freshwater trout fishing. Tailwater fisheries on the Jackson, Smith and Dan rivers provide year roundaction. Spring creeks stay active with Trico hatches and hoppers. If you arefishing the native brook trout streams in Shenandoah National Park, this is the season for ants and beetles. Water levels will be low, so stay hidden and make the longest cast you can in tight quarters.

In May, we conducted two brook trout seminars through Billy Kingsly’s Blue Ridge Angler fly shop in Harrisonburg. Club members had the chance to work on improving their casting, learn a little about may flies and stone flies, fishing strategies and favorite lies. From reports, it seems everybody caught fish, had a good time, and learned a lot.

We will offer a similar class on Saturday, Aug. 10. This seminar will cover Trico and hopper fishing on Mossy Creek and will be taught by Billy Kingsly. This will be an early morning class because the Tricos are setting the schedule. We will need to be on the water and ready to fish by about 6:45 a.m. Cost of the class is $35 prepaid and nonrefundable. More information will be provided to those who sign up. Contact Dan Genest.

Campfire Event - Billy Pearsall - The BOJC would like to thank the FFV for their co sponsorship of the Brotherhood of the Junglecock Campfire Event. We had 26 children and 29 adults participate in the function. The kids seemed to enjoy the fly tying, fly casting, canoeing along with the live bait demonstration and biologist program on the lake. But maybe what they liked best was catching fish with their sponsors. The meal was great, thanks to Joanna Barnes, and the kids really liked the raffle table. Thanks again to all who came and helped make this event successful.

bulletConservation News - May 2002, By Richard Roadcap - A fellow FFV member and I took part in the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Stream Survey Project. We fished Madison Run in Rockingham County, about fifteen miles north of Waynesboro. This project is designed to help VDGIF collect data on wild trout streams and the fishermen who use them. We weren’t able to gather much data due to low turnout of anglers, but we did manage to land a few Brookies on Hare’s Ear nymphs and Royal Wulff dry flies. If you would like to help survey a wild trout stream contact Richard Roadcap for VDGIF contact information. As you may already know the Game Department’s budget was cut $5.9 million by the recently adjourned General Assembly. Most likely to be affected are boating programs and construction and maintenance of boat ramps. It’s better than the proposed cuts of $18 million, but in the future there could be other attempts to transfer license revenues to the General Fund. All outdoor sportsmen will need to keep informed on this issue. Check out the "Shad Cam" on the VDGIF website this Spring. You may get to see real time photos of fish migrating through the Bosher’s Dam fish passage and you will learn about the shad restoration project that FFV continues to support through fund raising.    (Editor's Note: There is a link to the camera on our 'Links' page)
